ABOUT THE ARTIST

Joanne Thorne Arnold portrait

Joanne Thorne Arnold is best known as an oil painter who specializes in color. Her paintings are inspired by nature, particularly the lush landscapes and the ever changing season of the Southern Tier of New York.

She resides in Binghamton, New York and comes from a time when color could not be ignored. There was a time in her childhood when psychedelic posters were the norm, television was deemed “in living color” and films were all in “Technicolor”.

The colorist’s work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the country. She has had numerous solo exhibitions. In the last decade Joanne has been awarded four competitive artist fellowships in the form of painting residencies. These immersions have contributed in the constant pursuit of finding a voice through color.

Her work is not limited to the abstract. She often visits the figurative by painting the familiar like the repetition of rooftops in a landscape.

Recently Joanne painted a series of straight forward portraits that captured the essence of the sitter in their own environment. She believes the human face is a clear path to the human spirit. The models are people she knows and are connected to her art world. The portraits become a visual dialogue of telling a short story about each person depicted.
